The Fence By Jose Garcia Villa Whole Story Pdf

Fences in literature are often used by authors to represent the restrictions imposed on us in our day-to-day lives. Whether it is one of the many fences that shield a Mexican border town from roaming drug cartels, or the barrier of cultural differences separating two elderly neighbors in Vladimir Nabokov’s “The Garden Party,” through these physical boundaries we are able to consider what freedoms we have lost and how restrictive our current situation has become. Jose Garcia Villa's The Fence is an exploration of humanity's struggle when faced with forces too powerful to oppose when the only options are submission or death. The story focuses on Juan T. Madrigal; a Mexican man who was hired by a property developer to build a fence across the property line of his neighbor, Elisa Madrigal. Madrigal initially agrees to hire Juan T. Madrigal to build the fence for him but after being harassed incessantly by Elisa’s son, Cruz, he decides he has had enough and hires another contractor to continue building the fence. The situation starts when Juan T. Madrigal returns from a trip with a woman named Rosario who was going to marry him until their families forced them apart because of class differences. Upon his return he is reunited with his two children, Thad and Sarah, who have been living with their aunt in California while he has been gone. The joy that comes from the reunion is short lived, however, when Juan T. Madrigal’s neighbor Elisa threatens to kill him in a fit of rage after a day in which he does not leave her property to take out the trash. Elisa is angered further when she discovers the fence that Juan T. Madrigal has built across her property line and immediately begins harassing him again. Juan T. Madrigal, who is still upset over being separated from his family when he was young, tells his children to leave him alone before they are hurt by the actions of Elisa. He then hides in his house, with the exception of when he travels back to Baja for a brief period, with the intention of having Rosario help him escape to Mexico when things calm down. Unfortunately for Juan T., Elisa eventually discovers where he lives in California and begins to send her son Cruz around in an attempt to have him persuade Juan T. Madrigal into giving up his claim on the land so that her family may continue building their fence across it. Cruz’s persistence is so great that Juan T. Madrigal fears for his life and comes to a decision: he will give up his claim on the land so that Cruz will leave him be. Juan T. Madrigal quickly comes to regret this decision, however, when he receives a letter telling him that Elisa has sold the property for $200,000, an amount which her family cannot meet with their current financial situation. Rosario says she can marry him now; with the money they will be able to buy an even bigger piece of property in Mexico where they can live happily ever after with their children. The decision Juan T.
